Blind

We are running blind through life. As if in a thick fog we only realize ourselves. Only sometimes we can take a glimpse on what lies behind the fog.

The fog is only the minds obfuscation.
A clear mind will open your eyes.

  1. Dante Alighieri: “Midway through life’s journey, I found myself within a dark wood.” This, from my memory, is the beginning of “The Inferno.” Dante proceeded through the three domains of the afterlife, Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, until he was given the “beatific vision,” that enlightenment to which some few Christians could attain. By that point, he HAD a clear mind, and his eyes were open.

  2. Another fog metaphor related to clearing the mind, from Shunryu Suzuki (Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind):

After you have practiced for a while, you will realize that it is not possible to make rapid, extraordinary progress. Even though you try very hard, the progress you make is always little by little. It is not like going out in a shower in which you know when you get wet. In a fog, you do not know you are getting wet, but as you keep walking you get wet little by little. If your mind has ideas of progress, you may say, “Oh, this pace is terrible!” But actually it is not. When you get wet in a fog it is very difficult to dry yourself. So there is no need to worry about progress.
